Wirral man arrested and charged following racially aggravated robbery and assault at Birkenhead shop

Detectives investigating a racially aggravated robbery and assault at a Birkenhead shop on Saturday, 22 December have charged a man in connection with the offence.

At around 7.30pm, officers and the ambulance service were called to Premier Convenience Store in Freeman Street to reports of three people entering the premises. A member of staff was assaulted and received facial injuries. Items were stolen from the shop and the victim was also reportedly racially abused.

A 16-year-old boy from Oxton and a 17-year-boy from Moreton were arrested on suspicion of robbery and have been taken to police stations for questioning. They have both been released under investigation.

Following further enquiries, 33-year-old Daniel Devlin from Price Street, Birkenhead was arrested yesterday (Thursday 27 December) and has now been charged with racially aggravated assault and assault by beating. 

Devlin appeared at Wirral Adult Remand Court today, Friday 28 December and was remanded in custody to next appear at Thursday, 14 February 2019 at Wirral Magistrates Court.
