Detectives appeal for information following attempted robbery at supermarket in Walton

News   •   Jul 12, 2019 14:55 BST

We can confirm that detectives are investigating following an attempted robbery at a supermarket in Walton in the early hours of this morning, Friday 12 July.

At 5.35am, officers were called to Asda on Utting Avenue to reports of an attempt to steal a cash box from a security guard outside the store. Nothing was stolen and the suspect made off.

The suspect is believed to have been a man on a red scooter, who was wearing a white helmet and dark clothing. No weapons were seen or injuries caused.

Detective Chief Inspector Cheryl Rhodes said: "We want to hear from anyone who saw this incident or anyone in or close to the store acting suspiciously. This was a desperate and brazen attempt to steal cash which thankfully failed, but we are still looking for the person responsible and the vehicle used.

"The many security measures in place should be a deterrent to anyone who would even contemplate trying to commit this type of robbery, but I can assure all businesses that we will support them by identifying those responsible and putting them before the courts.

"We will not tolerate any threats of violence towards those who live and work in our communities."
